Transmission ?- Overdrive in 3rd gear?
This is my first post. Hopefully someone here can help me out. I have a 2001 ram 2wd with a 360 in it. The truck is only used to pull a car trailor 3-4 times a year so it only has 31000 miles on it. The transmission had to be rebuilt last year because of a crack in the main pump. At that time, I had the diesel clutches installed. Ever since then, it has been locking into overdrive in 3rd gear. Even with the O/D turned off, it goes into overdrive in 3rd. The shop that rebuilt the transmission cannot fix the problem. Has anyone had this problem or know how to fix it?
are you sure its o/d. The tranny also goes into lockup. It shift 1st, 2nd, 3rd, lockup, then o/d. If i remember right (i dont take it out of o/d to offten, dont tow to much) the tranny still goes into lockup with o/d off. Please correct me if im wrong. Also, in another post somewhere, i think i read tht there is a way to eliminate lockup. I think you can do it with a programmer like hypertech. Im not 100% sure about that though.
Yes, there is supposed to be a stage between 3rd and overdrive. I think this is when the torque converter is slipping. However, it should not enter this stage in 3rd or with o/d turned off. My transmission is shifting 5 times instead of 4.
Oh....well then...ummm...im sorry that my post didn't really help you. Hopefully w/ that cleared up, someone else knows whats going on. The only thing i have left to say is try bringing it to another tranny shop...maybe they have seen that before. good luck
Yes, the torque converter will lock up in third gear when you turn off the OD. It's best to tow with the OD off in most cases, unless your on a downhill or flat stretch and are traveling around 55 - 65 mph. If your truck does not have a transmission cooler, the factory one is located between the radiator and air conditioner condensor I believe, get one installed. Get a big one. Over-heated tranny fluid is what kills transmissions.
Having your transmission lock up the torque converter helps to keep the fluid temperatures down, so it is a good idea to tow with the OD off, except where you can be cruising down the highway as mentioned above. You don't want the transmission shifting back and forth or running in OD without the torque converter being locked up.

my 01 shifts as described above...
1st -> 2nd -> 3rd -> TC lock --> OD.
its does TC lock regardless of od on or od off.
the only difference of od/on and od/off is whether it makes the final shift to od or not.

I know my tranny started acting funny after being submerged in thick mud also my alternator got fried.I got the alternator to work enough so the truck would run again but do you think a low voltage signal would cause wierd shifting?
Justthe info I was looking for.....Quick question, When should the TC lock-up? On mine, it locks immediately after shifting into third...almost like it does two shifts at the same time. Is this normal, or should there be some delay before the TC locks-up. Thanks
