Default Changing Gauge Lighting Color

My '01 Ram's gauges (and every other interior thing except the aftermarket radio) lights up green at night. I would really like to change that to red. I know you can buy red LED bulbs at Super Bright LEDs, but I have a couple of questions.

1. What type of bulbs do our trucks use for gauge/dash lighting?
2. Would simply replacing those bulbs with red LEDs work?
3. How difficult is it to replace the bulbs?

Thanks for your help!

I am interested as well for my 00 Durango. I will tell you what I discovered this past weekend when I had to pull the dash for the evaporator. The Durango's cluster (maybe similar to your 01 Ram, not sure tho) uses 194 bulbs (clear-no colored covers) for the back lighting. The cluster has a green mask, which is what gives the green backlight color. I have read about people using both LED's and colored bulb covers, but I have not read that anyone has been too happy with the results, because of the underlying green mask. Replacing the bulbs in my Durango is easy, again, not sure about your Ram. Dash bezel pops off, 4 phillips screws holding in the cluster, cluster comes out, 194 bulbs twist off. If anyone can add or has had good results, please reply. Thanks.

The green mask is what I was afraid of... Does anybody know if the red LEDs would shine through well, or would the green mask make the color look "muddy"?

i would say the color would be "muddy" But is there a way to get the greek mask off? If so, just take it off.

I have never seen what the mask looks like behind the cluster, but on my friends newer eclipse we used paint thinner on the back side of it to take all the stuff off.
