Default Evaporator Coil

My father is currently having a problem with the evap coil in his 98 ram 1500, 318. With the ac on, it will pour water out the vent on the passenger side floor or out from some where under the dash soaking the carpet within a few hours of the ac being on. It still drips out under the truck like it is supposed to though. We tried blowing it out through the drip hole in the engine bay, and tried using a water hose the same way, but still did not work. Now, does anyone know an easy/easier fix than removing the entire dash to access the evap coil? Or what is exactly causing this problem? Please help!

Default RE: Evaporator Coil

No real easy fix. It appears that the HVAC box has a crack in it somewhere down low. If you can get compressed air into the drain hole in the engine compartment and its clear, try this. One person to blow air in that drain hole and another inside the cab to feel if the air/water comes out somewhere. Or an alternate method is to do the same thing with water pressure instead of air to see where the water comes out. Messy but effective. Yet another, albeit limited method is to remove the blower and use an inspection mirror and light to look around under the evaporator area. Right under the evap., the HVAC box forms a "U" or "V" shape and down into the drain tube through the firewall. That's the area you need to concentrate on. If you find a crack, there are several compounds that could repair it from outside without dropping the dash, but the best repair would be to remove the box and repair from both sides or replace the lower half. The leak may be located at the nipple that sticks through the firewall; a place you could never repair without removing the HVAC box. Good luck.
