Default V10 MPG

Alright i recently bought a 99 dodge ram 2500 with the V10. I love this truck, the getup and go is irrelevent to me but im wondering who with the V10s has done a CAI and Exaust and what specificly i should be looking at.... ive always been a ford car person. went with the truck because on occasion i will be towing (though not often and only about 9000 pounds)

I have heard many people say that the mpg's on the V10 is almost the same as with the 5.9 V8, maybe one or two less, but with my 360, i'm getting 11-12 and have talked to many with the V10 who get the same. Except you will have all that extra power to tow with. IMHO, if a person doesn't want the Cummins, the V10 is the way to go...I really wished I that extra power now.

hate to say but i blow that right out to 18 MPG on the high way and it drops to 14-15 MPG towing at a speed of around 110KPH (68-70MPH)or about 13-14around town i am a lead foot with the V10. i'm glad i went with the V10, where i am it isn't a very common Engine let alone the Dodge itself so i stand out in shows(it is an import for Australia). the only engine mods are a K&N filter and extractors, and i also have a hard top so that may help aswell.

My truck is the 4x4 QC with the 5.9L engine and I get around 14-15mpg around town and I got as high as 19 on a trip. It depends on how the trucks are set up, tire size, gearing, 4x4etc... And also how you drive them and where you drive them. On average a V10 with the same setup as mine would only get around 9-10mpg around town. That's quite a bit of difference. Ozmarshy, I can't tell if your is a 4x4 or not, but that is great mileage you are getting on your truck!!

I'veaveraged 16+ mpgpulling a coupld jet skis on a 700 mile one way trip at 65 mph, only making two stops for gas and the potty, I also have the big wide tires, and the speedo is off -4 mph at 65. I run max inflation of 60 psi in the tires. all stock other wise.

I have found my V10 liked quality synthetic oil, good for .5 mpg, it liked the K&N cold air intake, good for .5 mpg and it liked the high flow cats, no mpg change. All these make the truck feel more responsive. I'm running tires 10% over stock with 3.55 gears. I average 10, I've seen as high as 13 and as low a 8 towing 10 000 lbs on a long hill. This is according to the trucks display. I've heard that youneed to becareful with exhust stuff because there are 2 cylinders fire at the same time so with the wrong exhust your v10 could sound like an import. I had thought about headers but I don't want tobe tightening the boltsup all the time.

What type of truck do you have? (engine size, 4x4?, 1500? QC? etc..)

It's nice to see these Ram's can get decent mpg's!

One of the most knowledgeable by far
Ram V10 owners is Chris Siano
who is also a computer whiz and Ham Radio operator

http://dodge.off-road.com/dodge/arti...String=RamHack

Chris also supercharged his V10
did nearly all of his own maintenance
and kept MPG information.
Family time obligations keep Chris occupied and off forums

Dave Fritz at Virginia Tech U
has quite a lot of info on all Rams
including V10's

http://dodgeram.org/tech/gas/more_power/V10.htm

If is worth reading all the TSB's about the V10

http://dodgeram.info/tsb/index.html

For highway cruising, the V10 Rams do well with GearVendor units

How do the V10's accelerate? Are they more like a diesel or more like a hotrod V8? I have read they pull hard but turn up slow, and then I have read they will outrun Mustang GT's and anything else on 4 wheels. What is the truth?
