Vacumm leak
I used to use a squirt bottle (old liquid soap bottle worked good) with water in it and squirt it around where the intake meets the head. if the sound of the engine changes or it runs rough or better for a bit there is your leak. don't forget to squirt it around the throttle body and egr if equipped. To check if your leak is caused by something connected to a vacuum hose either unplug them from the manifold one at a time and plug the manifold port with you finger or if it is a rubber hose simply pinch it with some needle nose pliers. If it runs better there is your leak. To check for a blown belly pan gasket unplug the pcv from the valve cover and plug the pcv vent on the other valve cover. With the engine idling cover the hole in the valve cover where the pcv would go for about 30 seconds. if you have any vacuum there the belly gasket is leaking. You will mostlikly have some pressure there due to blow-by. (normal)
a hand held vacuum pump can sometimes be handy.
