Default fuel gauge whoas

I have a 1997 Dodge Ram extended cab 4x4 andthe fuel guage is freaking out.. It will show just above empty and I'll fill the tank and it will only take 14 gallons.I'llget in the truck and it will show half tank... I go down the road 10 miles and it shows empty!!!! Its driving me nuts!!! Edmunds.com shows that my truck has a 35 gallon tank. I've had the truck for about 6 months and have never put 30 gallons of gas in it at one time. Is there a sending unit that could be going bad? How hard is that to replace?

thanks

sounds to me like you need to check the ground for the level sensor.. u should have 3 wires coming off the fuel pump.. one for pump + .. one for sending unit.. and one for ground.. try un plugging the whole mess and cleaning it out.. plug it back in.. check your wires for anything that might mess it up.. breaks.. grounding out.. etc..

fuel pump and sending unit is inside the tank. to replace you'll have to drop the tank or lift the bed. some report it is easier to raise the bed.
