Default interesting hesitation problem

Well I took a trip this weekend. The trip had Ozark hills and it was rush hour so I need to use the loud pedal a lot. I ran into some problems (with O/D both on and off, no trailer) when I hit about 3500 RPM's. I have a 97 318 auto with only 48,000 miles.

The only thing I did different before the trip was get 89 octane in lieu of 87 since I was going to put a few hundred miles on it and figured I might get some better mileage and acceleration. I got the check engine light when I was trying to pass a semi on a hill and only made it to 70 (the speed limit, but not practical at rush hour) and started sputtering. I got to my destination and unhooked the battery, hooked it back up and I was fine. I headed home a couple days later with no check engine light until I needed to floor it and it happened again. I was able to moderately accelerate to interstate speeds off of exit ramps without problem.

I put some 87 octane back in and some fuel injector cleaner today at work. I got home and unhooked the battery again and then parked it for the night. I let it warm up and revved it gradually up to 4k RPM's and then a couple of quick revs to 3500 and 4000 and no hesitation at all.

So I'm thinking either:

A. Transmission related

B. Bad gas

C. Fuel Filter or something routine that the previous owner didn't do (I have only had this for 2k miles)

D. Get the code read you lazy bum

Let me know what you think - either A, B, C, D or something else?

I may take it easy and run this tank of gas through and then use the lead foot afterwards and hopefully it is bad gas.

haha yah i like D

to me sounds fuel related bad gas, week pump fuel filter is in the tank with the pump so u cant check it easley

burn that gas out of it then get some good stuff (dunno where yout from) but find a good bussy station and put some in (dont fill it all the way up incace it is the pump thel youll half to get all that fuel out)

next time your CEL comes on get the code before you disconect the bat too

oh also could be your cat
