Default Thinking of Supercharging my SS/T!

Hello guys, I am a noob here on this forum but have been registered for quite some time. I recently sold my Z06 to make way for a house purchase or maybe another toy, who knows? Now since I sold my Z06 I want to beef up my SS/T. I don't really wantsilly power, but I have been thinking of supercharging the SS/T. The mods I have are in my sig. As for superchargers, I don't know a thing about them. I occasionally like spirited runs on the street or may take the truck to the track, but nothing abusing. I drive this truck everyday so I am also looking for reliablity, if we can use that and supercharger in the same snetence, lol. What all needs to be done to add a supercharger? I hear of changing plugs to boost controllers, etc and I don't know where to begin. The truck has 117,000 miles on it and runs exceptionally strong. I guess what I'm asking is what needs to be done beofre I start going and adding a supercharger, or can I just add a supercharger on the truck and be done with it besides maybe a little tuning? Also if anybody has a complete supercharger laying around, let me know. I guess you can tell I already miss the power of the Z,lol. Thanks Guys!

For a conservative S/C setup, you'll obviously need the S/C kit. Some have a self contained oiling system, and others tap into the engine oiling system. You'll need to upgrade the fuel system, seems like most guys running mild setups are sticking with the stock returnless system, then adding an inline high pressure fuel pump with an FMU looped in. Some of the S/C kits come with an airhat that houses extra fuel injectors that turn on under boost, I'm not sure what fuel mods are required with these setups however. To play it safe you'll need some way of turning down the timing, the MSD Boost Timing Master is a popular choice for this job. Also a good idea if you're leaving town & aren't sure if you'll be able to get high-octane fuel where you go, you cancrank the timing down to keep detonation at bay. In an ideal setupyou'd havea Wideband O2 sensor as well to constantly monitor the air/fuel ratio to keep it from leaning out under boost. Some guys get fancy and run stand-alone systems, but if you're set on keeping it mild you shouldn't need to go down this route. I'm not sure if the S/C kits will include it or not, but you'll also need a way to keep your MAP sensor from seeing boost, some use a check valve only, some use a voltage clamp and a check valve. The reason for this, if our MAP sensors detect boost I believe the voltage spikes and hits the fuel cutout point, very bad thing under boost.

Sorry for the book, but I'm still not sure if I hit all the important points though. I'm in the middle of setting up an intercooled turbo project on my 97 Ram right now, so I've been researching all this stuff for a couple months.

Will a SC kit have all the necessary items to make for a safe install? SOunds complicated, but as I said I am not too familiar with them so I may not know. I just hear of people changing fuel pumps, going with different injectors, etc. Didn't know where I needed to start. I'm not looking to buy a new kit as they are quite pricey, but am looking for a nice used kit.

I just sold a turbo kit off my Mazda 3, the car was wicked strong (stand alone fuel managment, the whole 9), and ran flawless, any day, any time, but it was time to let the wife have the car, NA.

That said, buying a used kit will save you money, but when you buy one from someone who THINKS they new what they were doing makes things more arduous. I say this because I knew of a few fuys who had Mazda systems that just made the modification a nightmare when it didn't need to be.

The companies (most) that put these systems together give you or either know EXACTLY what you need to make your vehicle run properly. You will also have some tech support from them as well.

To sum it up the difference between what you'd save buying used IMO would not be worth the hassle. Go new then you know what you have. I thought about FI'ing my rig so I did some looking around and it seems as if there are a few good systems that are a simple install, well, simple for the advanced wrench.

Good luck,
FF

Not a bad deal, that Dak was as fast as my 3. [sm=gears.gif]

Do your homework though.
