Default Surging in 3rd gear while towing

I got some issues I wanted to see if anyone could help me troubleshoot. I have a rebuilt tranny in my Dodge, less than 10k on it. I towed my Jeep about 400 miles last weekend and had a few issues. First was that anything above about 65 would cause my RPM to bounce around about 100-300 RPM. (I was towing with OD off, of course). If I kept the speed around 60 it wouldn't do it or if it would it would be very rare. Since coming home and unhooking, my tranny will now also downshift into 3rd as I pass 70 mph (unless I really really baby the pedal) and not shift back into OD (even if I let all the way off the accelerator) until speed drops below 65ish.

I took it into the tranny shop I used today (since it is under warranty) and they couldn't find anything with their diagnostic machine. They did come up with a TSB (18-006-02) that has some symptoms that are very similar to mine and said I probably needed to have the computer reflashed at the dealer.

I was wondering if you guys familiar with transmissions thought that this was a line they were giving me in order to avoid warranty work or if it sounds legitimate. I do have a reflash sticker on my PCM, not sure how recent it is so I'm unsure if it was after this TSB was issued.

Thanks
Jerrod

It sounds to me like your torque converter is locking and unlocking. This is a very common problem with our dodges. The throttle positioning sensor (tps) starts to fail. It will run you about $40 from the parts store and is located on the driver side of your throttle body. Simple to replace and has cause many transmissions to fail. I highly recomend anybody that has had tranny problems or replaced their tranny to also replace this sensor.

Hey, excellent advice. It fixed the issues I was having with the upshift/downshift at 70ish while empty. I won't be able to test it under load for a few weeks, but I'm sure that was probably the issue there as well.

Thanks again
