Default Taking Key Out While Truck Is Running?

I can take the key out of my ignition whi;e my truck is running. Is this a normal thing, or is something wrong with my truck? I mean, it's not a real problem or anything, but I'm curious now.

I had this happen on my first car, a Ford LTD. The ignition lock is broken. It's a small tumbler pin that locks the key in as the ignition is turned. It won't hurt a thing, but is good for freaking people out.
