Engine shot or is it simpler?
So I posted here yesterday too, but I'd like to narrow down my issue and see if there are any fresh ideas or suggestions floating around the forum. My '94 2500 is on the fritz. So I start the rig and it starts up great, idles great, rev the engine and it growls like the beast it is, couldn't sound better. Then I put it into drive, it shifts nicely and creeps forward just fine. Lightly press the gas and it goes just fine. Now when I put a little more on the pedal it grinds all of a sudden like my automatic is suddenly a 5 speed and I'm a 16 year old girl learning to drive a stick (or any girl driving a stick at any age for that matter j/k
). I'm not suddenly flooring it, mind you, it's no more accelaration than you'd apply when coming off a red light under normal driving conditions. The grinding stops as soon as a take my foot off the pedal as well. I've described this condition to a mechanic buddy of mine and he seems to think there is a possibility that the engine is starting to go bad. Anyone else have any experience with a problem like this? I'd really love to know if I'm going to cry myself to sleep for the next month.. Thanks guys!

if you can rev the engine in parkand neutral but your not able to put the pedal down with it in drive, it may beyour tranny going bad or is allready bad. just for kicks, try putting it in reverse and see if she will go with some throttle. have you tried it in 2nd and 1st? i dont think the engine would be going bad if you can rev it fine in park. but try putting it in reverse and see if it still does it.
Yeah I can definetely rev it up while it's in park. I will try that reverse trick and see if it grinds there too. I'm glad to hear that it might just be the tranny. And I haven't noticed a certain speed or RPM that sh*t hits the fan, but I will try to check the next time I bump and grind. I've just noticed it happens as soon as I start to accelerate.
You either have to pull the motor or the transmission. The tq converter sits right in between the two. Take it to a tranny shop. IMO you would have some sort of rod knock or something else for it to be the motor. Just to start it up and have it purr, then put it in gear and have it grind? I'd bet you have broken fins and clutch material in the converter.

another thing to be prepared for... if tc is grinding and self destructing, all that metal is floating around in your trans, which just can't tolerate that material. it will eat up everything. most shops won't warranty replacing tc only, cause they know whats going to happen next. they might recommend tearing it down and rebuilding. cost should be $1500-2500 range. be sure and get a warranty.
