Default Timing chain techniques

I am getting ready to do the timing chain on my 98 Ram1500 3.9l. I have always wanted to know why you have to align the crank and cam before removing the chain? Why does it have to be at TDC? Couldn’t you just remove the chain where it is and install the new one in the exact same place? Help me understand!

it doesn't really matter where they are when you take them apart. but its critical that you line them up when you put them back together. it is POSSIBLE to assemble them properly, or 180* out of time.

i think its best to remove the plugs and rotate the engine around so the marks line up. this way you know where its supposed to be. both the sprockets are keyed, so they can only fit on the crank and cam one way. best to take them apart lined up, them put them back together lined up. rotate the engine a few revolutions to make sure everything is lined up, not binding, etc. see the pics below. i used a dab of rtv on the marks for visibilty, then wiped it off before putting on covers.
