Default Lower ball joints?

I have a 98 Ram 1500 4x4. I know that my lower ball joints are bad and want to replace them. The repair book I have shows the steering knuckle and ball joints attached just the opposite of what is on my truck. That is the ball joint studs are pointed up in the book and pointed down on the truck. I have tried loosening the lower ball joint nut and all it does is spin the stud. Are there any tricks that I should be made aware of to cure this. I have a ball joint removal tool, torch's and most any tool I can think of that I might need. I have taken the hubs out in the past so that is not a problem. Any help would be appreciated!
