RE: 5.2 to 5.9 computer
1997RAM,
I did a similar swap in my 01. I beleive that you'll have to stay with the manual tranny computer, but you can run the engine on your 5.2 computer. it would be better to swap the ECM to one from a 5.9 with a manual tranny. If you have done a lot of internal engine modifications to the new 5.9, you may need to consider a custom flash of your original 5.2 ECM.
I had my original 5.2 ECM flashed with B&G and the truck runs like a top.
The reason you can't swap ECM's from vehicles with different trannies is because the computer does take readings from the tranny on the automatic. Now that being said, I am speaking from my experience with my 2001 with the 46re transmission. I'm guessing you have a 1997 RAM, butdon't know which tranny you are running. It is possible that in 97 the ECM did not receive any input from the tranny, someone else will have to step in and talk about that.

RE: 5.2 to 5.9 computer
I have done this in my 93 dakota. The stock computer will adjust enough for the larger engine. I Belive In Ram and Dakota in 97 they changed the auto tranny to 46re From 46rh. which meens the computer controls the shifting. If you put it on you manul setup it might just give you lots of codes. It probably will run but not the best. I would leave onstock computer unless you want to reflash it but if your not going any major engine mods you dont realy need it. My engine runs harder than most stalk 5.9 so I know the computer from the 5.2 is more than enough. Just change everything else incuding the injectors. Good Luck!!!!!
