Default Anyone have trouble with their gas gauge?

I've noticed since the day I bought my Ram that the gas needle fluctuates quite a bit when not on full. If I have 3/4 of a tank and stop, the needle drops almost to 1/2 tank and slowly works it's way back up. This is on a 97 Ram. It's a little annoying, because when on 1/4 tank it will drop to E when I stop and cause the gas light to come on, so I never really know how much I have. This is my first Dodge, btw. My last truck was an 00 F150 and the needle never moved an inch on it. I had an old camaro that did that, but is this a common issue on a Dodge?

I am however enjoying the truck. I've had it for over 6 months and have enjoyed the ride quality and love the sound that a 318 has through duals. Lots better than my last Fords were.

I guess it's normal. I have a 96 and mine does that too. The low fuel light starts to come onwhen i have about 8 gallons left in the tank depending on what grade I'm on.

Just reset the trip tick when you get gas. That way you always know when it's time to fill up. That's what I do anyway.

its normal for that year of truck.. the 'floating' level sensor isnt like it was when it was new.. you could.. change the fuel pump.. that will come with a new level sensor on it.. wont be quite as toutchy.. but it will still float.. cant get around that..

I figured as much. I wish there was a way to modify a Ford unit to work. I try to use the trip meter to tell me when to fill up, but I get a little nervous at about 270. That's when the gauge is below 1/4 tank and it bumps E quite often. I don't know what my mpg is but my only mod is the dual exhaust with no cat. It seems like my mpg is somewhere in the range of 10-11 if I take it easy on it. But that's mostly because I'm a little nervous about running it too close to E since I don't really know when it's on E.

I did and had to be towed. Mopar had to replace the sending unit. I was out of gas when my gauge showed 1/4 tank. I don't trust the sending units in these puppies, would never go below a 1/4 tank.

my 00 2500 tends to go to "E" whenever it feels like it. most of the time its when i have a full tank. i just turn off the igition and restart the truck, guage then reads fine

I have a 97 and it does the same thing. I reset my trip meter on the last fill up and it now shows 1/2 tank with only 90 miles on the trip meter. I guess the only way to do it is to carry 5 gallons of gas, set the trip meter and run it dry.. then you'd know how many miles before your "empty". would that hurt anything?

I might get tired of it eventually and get a set of Autometers to replace ALL the stock cluster. I've already got to buy a set for the Stang, so I might go ahead and get another for the truck. Because I'm very picky over gauges working properly and it drives me nuts.

What can most of you get on a tank in city driving? I just filled up and I showed 257 miles on a tank with the needle right above E.
