almost starts
can anyone tell me why my 96 ram 1500 4x4 w/5.9 wont start. It barely turns over sometimes not at all. replaced the starter ran fine for one day. replaced the battery same thing. replaced the battery cables still nothing, checked all ground wires? I don t know= Any help please
You'll have to give a few more specifics or we'll just be throwing up wild guesses.
Does it click when you turn the key?
Does it turn the serpentine belt but doesn't fire?
Is there just nothing when you turn the key?
The two basic reasons a car won't start are no fuel or no spark. Fuel's usually the easiest to eliminate. If you have a fuel pressure test connection on the top of your fuel rail (plastic cap that looks like a tire pressure valve underneath) you can put the back side of a tire guage to the rail and see if pressure is in the line (squirts gas.) If yes, then turn the key again but dont start and listen for the fuel pump to repressurize the line. If it does, then you're getting fuel.
Electrical is harder to track down (for me anyway).Best bet would be to pull a plug and check for spark then work your way backward through wires, dist, and so forth until you find the culprit. There areguys here that are way better at tracking down electrical problems than I am, hopefully they'll chime in.
If I had to wager a guess, I'd say fuel pumpwas going out based on the fact that it works a day then doesn'tthe next, but without more details, I'm totally speculating. The starter and battery thing it weird though, asreplacing a bad startershould be an easydiagnose and fix, and shouldn't relate to a battery dying, unless you've got some really crazy electrical problems.

the truck kinda semi turns over and tries to start, but its like the battery is dead not enough juice.the serp belt is turning also. i replaced the fuel pump two months ago and all new plugs and tune up. i tried to jump it and it still does the same. it was running perfect and now this. the previous owner said the motor only has 7500 miles on it. ijust traded the new starter in maybe it was faulty? have to wait until tomorrow
