horsepower difference??
i messed up my engine in my 2001 5.9 and had to put a new motor in and i got a 98 engine in it and it seems like it doesnt have nearly as much power as the 2001 did so my question is.. is there a hp difference between the different year motors? ive got headers and a air cleaner on right now (cut off exhaust, no muffler) and my buddy has a 2001 sport with a 5.9 in it and all he has is a cut off muffler and we lined em up today and he whooped my *** till about 60mph.. ive got alot of power at 3000 rpm's so i was killing him on a roll but my acceleration from a stop is horrible.. is that the problem??
There have been some slight differences in camshafts
between different years of the Magnum 5.9V8
http://dodgeram.org/tech/gas/specs/valve-5_9.htm
but I doubt they account for any difference you are feeling,
and it is more probable that a blown plenum gasket, clogged catalytic converter, or cracked heads would be at the heart of a big difference.
During 1994-2001 most of the hp rating differences year-to-year on the Magnum 5.9 V8 came because the exhaust systems were made slightly less restrictive
{In the above table the compression ratio for 1999-2001 should not be 9.1 but a lower 8.9 because the soapdish cavity in the top of later year pistons was made slighly bigger}

i know its not a clogged cat but how would i know if i need to replace my plenum? and if my head was cracked then are there certain stress points on these heads that i shuld look for or would it just be anywhere?
tell tale signs of leaking plenum are -
spark knock/pinging on 87 octane gas.
excessive oil usage.
puddles of oil in the bottom of the intake manifold, especially in the rear, peek down in tb, much better view if you remove tb.
you can also cap of pcv hose and pcv port on manifold, then disconnect the breather hose at the other valve cover and feel for vacuum sucking. if plenum is sucking air out of the lifter valley you'll feel vac at the valve cover port.
