Default Brake Light Help

Hey guys, what is that part called that controlls when the brake lights come on? For example I turn off my truck and the brake lights stay on after the truck is off. I wiggle the brake pedal around and it turns of.

The switch is located up under the dash, in line with the vertical pushbar. Just follow the metal bar from the foot pedal upwards. The brake light switch is a 2x2x1 inch (roughly) little black or gery box with a single little plunger in it. The plunger rests up against the brake pedal bar.

Before you replace it, push down on the brake pedal so the bar is NOT against the plunger. Now GENTLY take a pair of needle nose pliers and place them behind the plunger, and GENTLY pull the plunger out a notch or two. The plunger is indexed and will "click" as you pull it out. I would go two clicks. Now again.....GENTLY release the brake pedal back. Don't snap it. Let it back easy and it will reset that plunger to the correct depth.

This is all based on the switch just needing to be recalibrated. The switch can also pop out of it's mounts, or it does wear out. If you have to replace the entire switch, they are about 12-15 bucks at the auto store. The switch turns 45 degrees either way and pops out. Installing it is reverse of removing it.LOL.

It's easy but you have to have it working properly or your cruise control won't work, and if you drive an automatic, the torque converter will lock and unlock continuously.

I hope this helps.

Good luck with your ride.
