I've heard different stories about why the paint is peeling. When I shopped around for a paint job a few years back, nobody would touch it unless they could strip it back to bare metal. I wheel my truck and in trees so a quality paint job would just get ruined. The quality you want to go with paint all depends on what you want to do with it. For me, and maybe for you, a rattle can is ok at this point.

Well, it's just the clear coat at this point not the paint. I might just take 1500 git sandpaper and a little dish soap and try to wetsand the clearcoat off and flush it to the paint.

I know some of the serious paint/show guys don't even go with a clearcoatas they can't repair it as easily, they just wax the bejesus out of it with carnuba wax by applying it with their fingers so they can feel for imperfections.

Aim, go with your instincts on this one. However, the base/clear paint NEEDS the clear. If you have an auto paint supplier in your area AND they will sell to the public, they will be your best source for info. The supplies you need will have to come from a paint supply house.
1 scuff the offending clear SMOOTH.
2 SEAL the clear (most important step!)
3 mask windows, body panels, etc. Don't try to blend anything if you haven't got the background/equip.(but you will need a gun, and compressor). Bring it all the way down the pillars. Mask at seams, breaks, badges, moldings, etc.
4 spray color; then clear (several coats of clear)
5 wait a day or two and buff out any imperfections.
Check the library 1st for auto painting books to get the basics and gun techniques.
Don't try to do a panel as large as a roof with spray cans.
This is not a how-to. Just helpful info from someone who has painted many vehicles in the last (too many years to count)haha. Started on police cars in the '70's

How'd you loose that job, painting "donut patrol" on the side of the cars?

Way too many years ago. And Mayberry only got 1 new car per year.LOL
My job was to take the factory car and add lights, radios, cages, door and roof colors, etc. Then, after service, convert them back to civilian for resale. Had to do the same for public works veh. too
