Default loose steering wheel/clock spring

I knowthis ones been covered beofore, but it looks like I'll need some extra info.

I have a 96 1500 4X4. For several years now, the steering wheel has felt quite loose. Lots of side to side , up down movement possible. It feels like the movement comes directly column hub itself, and not the shaft. Also the clock spring has beennon functionalfor about a year as well (not good).

I have removed the air bag (yes, carefully!) and wheel, and to no surprise, the clock spring was pretty shattered. Could this cause the loose wheel, or should I be looking for something else?

Also - there is a loose c-clip around the shaft that I can't seem to find where it goes. I assume it prevents the shaft from sliding out of the column, as if I push on the shaft, it appears it can slide right out of the column. Make sense? I can post pics if necessary.

Thanks in advance ofr any/all help.

Chris
