What I usually do is run it through every gear for ten seconds then check the dipstick, but I guess neutral works too

yeah just get it warm, every gear.
drive, neutral, reverse, neutral, drive, neutral, etc.
until u feel good about it, just remember to check it in neutral..
cause if u check it in park the reading is going to be higher..

RE: how much tranny fluid?
Actually, there's an optimum fill curve in the service manual based on engine temp. I try to follow that as best as possible.
Motorbrreath:
If you're going to pull the tranny pan and you haven't done it yet, put a piggy back type plug in the thing. It makes it unbelieveably easy to change the fluid and pull the pan. I put my plug on the back passenger's side of the pan just above where the magnet is. I put it in the side of the pan not the bottomso I don't ever have to worry about catching it on something. Put a little RTV between the washers and the pan for a good seal and you're good to go.
