Default Need Correct Octane Level

I have a 1999 1500 4x4 ExCab with 318, auto. I bought it used so I do not have the original owners manual. It has about 50,000 miles on it now. My question is, what is the recommended octane grade to use. I assumed 85 octane (lowest available at the pumps where I live, and also the cheapest), but I tend to get pinging when going up hills or when towing. Seems fine when I use 87 or 89 octane, but then my wallet starts pinging. I have also tried 85 octane with an octane booster added to a full tank. This seems to work too, but is a hassle and also not really cost effective. I'll probably just keep using 87, but was just curious as to what was actually recommended by Dodge.
Thanks.

Default RE: Need Correct Octane Level

I think 87 is recommended.
