Default Metal in the rear diff..

Ok, I need some help. I pulled my rear diff cover plate to change the oil out and found large pieces of metal stuck to the magnet. They are not gear teeth. one piece appears to have been like a little hollow tube about an inch long and 1/2 inch in diameter. This rear end is in a 2000 Dodge 1500 2wdwith a 5.9liter. It is a 3.92 rear end and does have the LSD because I can see what appears to be little clutch packs on each axle shaft. Something also appears to be wearing away the side gear bearing cap on the passenger side. If someone has a picture of the rear end parts breakout I can point it out and then I need advice on where to get replacement parts. I get the feeling they are going to be dealer only. If that is the case then who is the best dealer to get them from... Thanks for you help...[&o]

Your clutch pack has broken up. It happened to me in July. You can buy a new clutch pack for about $70, but it won't make the posi unit any stronger.
The best two options IMO are the Detriot Trutrac or the Auburn LSD. I went with the Trutrac as it works on a gear system so it has no clutches to wear down or break up.
PORC carries one for the Chrysler 9 1/4 axle for $489.99 and you can probably get it installed for $250. That's a lot cheaper than replacing an axle if the old posi unit breaks up further and causes an axle failure.

Yeah that looks like what I found.... Where is the best place to get an aftermarket replacement for it?

Try PORC (Performance Off Road Center), summitracing.com, DTS (Drivetrain Specialists), 4wheelparts.com.

That'll get you started at least.

I really appreciate all the help. I think I am going to go with an Auburn L/S set-up from DTS. This has been a great site for info. So far everything that I have read has applied to my truck. From the leaking plenum( did that last week), to this problem. I also looked for the rusted rear brake line and, sure enough, that baby looks like it is about to explode. Oh well, I still like my truck. I was raised around Dodges and for better or worse, I will always own one. Again, thanks for all the help...
