Default Need help with ecm diagnosis

Ok, here goes.... I have a 1996 dodge ram diesel that has been a dream truck for the past 328,000 miles. The other day the transmission downshifted, then the speedo and tach quit, then I noticed that the alternator quit charging, and possibly a problem with the ac and the cruise. Anyway, I suspected the computer, so I took it to the dealer. The report was $700 to $1200, but they didnt make any guarantees that it would be fixed. I checked around and bought a cardone rebuilt computer from autozone, and installed it, but it didnt fix the problem. Some say it is necessary to program the computer, but cardone says it is already done, in any event I got a refund. Am I missing something, and if so where do I get good technical info on the computers in these things? I can fix it because I am very good with technical stuff, I have to have some specs or something first, or else it will be a major project.

what do you think????

I'd post in the cummins sub-forum for specific diesel help.

Thanks for the info, the beauty of it is that the truck runs as well as it ever did because I don't have electronic fuel injection. The trans works too I just have to manually shift the automatic, and it won't go into overdrive.
