TIMING fluctates up and down

RE: TIMING fluctates up and down
I just went out and checked mine with a Genisys scan tool. It was pretty much the same thing. I would suspect that this might have something to do with pcm trying to keep the catalytic converter "lit off" I used the grafting feature on both O2 and ignition advance. Although they were not exactly the same, I could see a pattern to them both. I would call it normal...

I really appreciate all the replies. I still wonder about it being normal or just a common problem that no one really notices until it surfaces as something else. I checked a 1999 Durango at work today and the timing at idle only fluctuated between 6 and 10 degrees. Sorry for dragging this up again butI haven't been on here for a day or two.

RE: TIMING fluctates up and down
you know... after reading this thread again, I recalled that the base timing is not adjustable and the timing will fluctuate at idle. my suggestion now would be to find another ram or magnum equiped truck/van/suv and see what theirs reads... I bet it's the same.

That might bea dicey proposition to another Ram owner, "Hey can I stick this probe in your truck?"

As soon as can find a truck exactly like mine to check I will. Thanks again.

I think if your gentle when you ask - it might be all right. But you might have to buy a dinner and flowers to go with it. Anyway - it's interesting to hear you say that about the distributor. That actually makes sense to me. I could see that causing this. Have you ever personally heard of that happening ?
