Default 96 1500 Suspention Height

Hello All. I'm new. Recenlty purchased a 1996 1500, black, reg cab, long bed. I also used to own a 1987 W-100, and I also own right now a 1991 Ramcharger.

Anyway, My 96 sits really high, and for the life of me, I can't figure out why. It sits as high as all the other 2500's and alittle higher than a couple of them, but it's a 1500. It doesn't have a body lift, and it doesn't have a suspention lift. And it also does NOT have a leveling kit. Did the 96's have an offroad package that made them sit high? Or do you think it could have 3/4 ton springs and leafs in it? I really can't figure this out.Now don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining... I just need to buy new shocks and I don't know whether to get the 1500's or 2500's...

The only picture I have right now isn't that great, but here it is:

I have a side shot, but it's on my friends computer. And I need to get it off her's...

Any ideas? It has the 4x4 Magnum vinyl on the rear quarter panels like the ones that say offroad. I'm jsut lost... Can't figure this out..

Thanks everyone.

Judging by the tow mirrors someone put on there I would bet someone put beefier springs in.
Looking at your picture the front springs look newer than the rest of the suspension. (Less rusty)

Okay... Well it was owned by one other guy. One owner, 125k when I bought it, and it was completely set up for road side assistance. Air pump, yellow warning light, in bed power outlets and a bunch of other stuff. Had a CB in it, at one point in time, but now has mine...

So, if you say it has towing springs, what shocks should I get then? it really needs new ones. Badly.

Thanks for the reply.

Tough call
See if your local parts guy can tell you the difference in length.
My gut says go for 3/4 ton most of the stock 1500 ones are really soft IMHO.
The procomp ones I got with my 3" lift are probably a bit long.

Alright...

Maybe I'll take it over to the local stealer, and see if they can't tell jsut by looking at them.

I'll probably go for the 3/4 ton just to be safe. Worst comes to Worst, I return them and get the ones I need.

The local parts stores will have a shock book with the stock lengths listed by application. If you can find someone who knows this and isn't lazy you could get them to look up the length and measure yours compressed and extended if you bring the shock to them.

That way you can tell if its a stock 1/2 ton shock.
