Default Transmission Question

Yes, Another question reguarding what transmission I have. And don't worry I searched.

96 1500, 5.9L 4x4 - I read that the 46re is a 4-speed automatic, but I think, And I could be mistaken, that I have a 5-speed tranny, 5th being O/D.

I want to figure out which tranny I have, because I know about all the tranny problems Dodge has, and I figured hey, why not go grab one up while I can afford it, so that when the one I has goes, all I have to do is basically drop the tranny and put in the new one. Then I can rebuild the old one, and do it all over again.

Thanks for the help.

request a build sheet from Dodge, you'll get an absolute answer, and you'll know a good deal more about your truck for future reference.

If you're thinking it's 5 gears because of the shifting pattern you feel on the road, what you are probably feeling if the torque converter lock up in OD. After you shift from3rd to OD, the TC locks up about 10MPH later and it feels like another gear.
