Default New Transmission

Here is a good one.....Last weekend I found myself with a bit of a transmission problem...Shifting in and out of OD on its own, torque converter not locking up, check engine light came on, Trans Temp light came on.
Monday morning I brought it to the local Dodge Dealer hoping it wasnt too serious...later they called me and said "Trannys gotta come out".
The Torque converter was shot. So they replaced that, front pump, and later that week the entire valve body. So $1700. later I got my truck back.
NOW when driving it, it shifts fine and the torqe converter seems to lock up but it feels like its slipping. Normally it use to sit at about 1500 RPM when locked up, now when I put any pressure on the gas pedal it revs up to almost 2000....not shifting, just slipping.
What could the problem be????????

The problem is that they didn't replace the whole transmission. When the trans starts to go, debris circulates thru it in the fluid. This debris causes damage to more or less everything. I'd guess the bands are probably damaged, possibly the clutch packs too. For the money you paid for what they did, you're close to what an entire new transmission would have cost. What they did is not a very good way of dealing with a failing transmission.

Sounds like the clutch pack in the OD unit is probably toast. Snafu's right too, for the money you could have gotten a nicely built trans from someplace like APS, or one rebuilt to stock specs for around $800-900. I'd go back and raise holy hell and get a totally new trans from them. They should have known better than to replace a few components and pray for the best.

What do you think the parts would cost??

You can get a good rebuild kit with all the "soft" parts for $200-$250. This would include all clutches, kevlar bands, seals, anything wearable. New torque converter is about $300, new pump, not sure the cost on a new valve body but they don't usually go. Plus a bunch of labor to rebuild your existing transmission.

The CORRECT way to do it is to just pull yours out and replace it with a remanufactured transmission. A reman trans as a whole costs less than buying the individual parts needed to rebuild your existing trans. Remanufacturers have transmission repair down to a science, and can do it in a lot less time, and a lot less money, than any dealership cause that's all they do, which is why a reman trans costs less. For a dealership to rebuild your trans and not replace it with a reman is either careless and negligent, or they were intentionally ripping you off.

This is the accepted practice not only to save you as the customer time and money, but also because if the new transmissino fails the dealership can force the remanufacturer to pay any further repair bills. In this case, the dealership is liable. So either they're stupid, or they think they can rip you off.

I've heard good things about APS, especially about their "built" version. I think a standard reman. from them is in the $800-900 range, and their "built" version is around $1700.
APS

I've also seen remans. on E-bay for around $800-900, but I have no idea how good they are. Hopefully someone else here can throw a few more names out for you, so you can compare them all.

I just paid $1600 to have my 94 trany rebuilt. The overdrive gear shattered on it. It was why it cost so much ($450 for od gearset. ) They also put an overhaul kit and a new torque converter in it. I couldn't find a rebuilt that cheap.

The reason that your OD unit grenaded is because the oil passage going to the planetary gearset which is the overdrive is not big enough. It doesn't let enough oil in or out to properly cool and lubricate it, and they fail prematurely. All good remanufacturers increase the size of these passages to the '98 and newer specs. Most rebuilders don't, which is just asking for another failure. Just one more thing to consider.
