Default air compressor fun time

Hi everyone,
So I bought a 99 dodge ram 2500 about three months ago. I bought it knowing that the AC was not working. I am starting to address the problem with a freon recharge with UV today hopeing that it is just low on juice. The compressor cycled for about three seconds, every 45 seconds during the first can of freon. The AC did not feel like it got any colder though...but then again it is late October. Yep, its almost winter time...time to fix the Air Conditioning. Anyways. When I started with the second can of freon it started to cycle again for a couple seconds, then again a few seconds after, and then it started to continuously cycle but at a slower pace. I was excited becuase I thought this was a good thing. And then it looked like there was some sort of explosion with freon leaking out of the back of the compressor onto the engine block, then, after fighting the urge to run away, I turned down the freon hose, detached it, and turned off the engine. So now the car is fine, but if i turn on the AC, the compressor leaks out the back. Is this just a venting and i filled it too much with freon, or maybe there is a bad seal. I didnt get to check if the AC was actually working after the second can due to the spraying of freon when i try to turn it on. Any ideas,
Thanks,
Kevin

Sounds like the head pressure got too high at some time or another and blew out a pressure relief valve. Not real sure on these engines but on some you can just replace the relief valve. Definately though, you need to connect gauges to it while re-charging and monitor the pressures.
