I'm a little confused what you mean? Adding headers to a truck can never hurt. If you are hooking them up to a stock exhaust system, then gains from the headers will be limited. If you hook headers up to aftermarket/free flowing performance exhaust, then that is a differant story. In fact, your truck would rather have its headers hooked up to a performance exhaust, than just having them dumped. You would lose a lot of torque with "open headers".

im not sure what he means either. Adding headers will allow your exhaust gases to flow more smoothly versus the stock headers, even if put onto a stock exhaust system. The gains will be minimal but the engine will breath a bit better. Only way I can think of just having the exhaust dumping after the headers would be if you pro streeted the truck for drag racing only, otherwise it would be waaay to loud for normal driving.

no backpressure = no torque
unless you have like 1000 / 1000 lift cam
and huge blower with 25 lbs boost
