Hi All:
I currently own a 95 Ram 1500 5.9 lt. auto tranny. It is getting tired. I am looking to replace it & found a 97 Ram 2500 with really low miles (47K). It has a 5 speed standard trans & the V-10.
My questions are...
A: Is the V-10 a good motor?
B: Is the V-10 even more (by far?)of a gas hog than my 5.9?
C: Is the 5 speed standard tranny any good (My auto tanny is lousy).
Anything elso I should be aware of?
Thanks
Bob

have it checked out by a mecahnic first, if their are no major leaks and everyhting looks good buy it! the v10 is an awesome motor, the trans is also a great tranny you wont have any problems there, and the gas mileage is right around the 5.9 litreif not alittle better.

Any 10 year old truck should be checked out real good. I have no complaints about my V10 with 142 000 km (88 000 miles). I get about 10 mpg with over sized tires and 3.55 gears (4.10 gears would be nice for what I tow).I'm not sure about the 5 speed, Idon't think that option was available in Canada. My auto has been good so far. So far I've chaged the TPS, rear speed sensor, AC compressor, brakes, tie rod at pitman arm, track bar, added high flow cats, and changedall the fluids. My V10 likes synthetic oil(and gains .5 mpg)and the K&N cold air intake made a big improvment. Hope that helps.

You won't regret the V-10 compared to the 360. If you do much towing at all you'll love it for sure, and the fuel mileage towing comparable loads will be the same. My dad has had 3 in the past and they average 10-11, 11-12, 12-13 all with 3.55 gears. The 12-13 was a regular cab 2500 4x4 auto, the others were a 3500 4x4 flatbed with 5 speed and a 2500 4x4 ext cab auto. He has now since went with a cummins though. My brother still has the reg cab '95 2500 4x4 with 60k miles and I would give up my 1500 in a heartbeat to buy it, but he won't sell it.
