Default Gage cluster

I have a 1998 1/2 ton V-8 Dodge truck. All of the gages have gone wacko, and the mechanic tells me $700 for a replacement. The truck runs fine otherwise. I have checked all grounds and replaced the gound wire to the battery. Is there a less painful way out of this?

Unplug and re-seat the connector on the back of the cluster.
Not guaranteed, but sometimes it's just a loose connection.
