you also gotta remember jason alot of them D44's that hold up to that abuse your mentionings are also the HD44's... lovley jeep axles...

i have witnessed many of our D44's break during "easy" trailing,,, but like you said.. its whats under the tires that really counts..

Very true, sometime shafts do just suck and are old or get a hairline crack over the course of their life, I watched a kid I live with break a shaft just getting hit rig on the trailer! But like I said, it was already weak and needed just a little more to break so it did.

To me it seems that on a DD/occasional trail rig if your beating it hard enough to break a shaft other things will go first, like body panels

Also the HD44s just have a larger bearing in the hub and are usually 8 lug, other then that they're the exact same everything.
