Default alternator?

My 97 has been acting up this past week. When I'm driving the voltage gauge goes a little above half way. When coming to a traffic light and take my foot off of petal the voltage gauge takes a dive everything dims and it dies???? Alternator? Battery?

Alternator. Take it to a local parts house and they have a tool to diagnose it. The internal voltage regulator is going out.

It isn't the battery because the battery is only used to turn the starter. Once a vehicle is started, you can disconnect the battery and it will still run.

that is correct HOWEVER the alternator charges the battery, if it has a bad cell of is low on fluid it can cause it to charge erratically, causing what he is describing

Voltage control is handled by the PCM.

Charlie is right, however erratic charging still could be the alternator, or voltage regulator which requires replacing the whole PCM
