Default Protrusion under dash

From under my dash, and centered over the transmission hump, is a protrusion about 5" X 12" with two recessed screws holding it. What is it covering?
I do not want to remove it before knowing what's behind it, as I might screw something up. It is the same color as the dash and apparently an extension of it..

Unplug your battery before you go dicking around with it, just to be sure. Getting hit in the face with an unexpected airbag will eff your day up.

Its your ARS (airbag reastraint system) it is what tells your airbag to deploy (brains). Has i think 2 yellow connectors. The haynes manual reccomends you not to tamper with it- doesnt give and explanation why but i think it will mess up if you disconnect- there isnt a problem with taking the screws off the cover though- if u just want to look at a silver box looking thing lol.

I took mine off and painted it black, even drove around a few days with it off. Didn't know it had anything to do with the airbag. Oops.
