Default 4-WD Noise

I just bought my truck a week ago, and after the snowfall this weekend, it was the first chance I had to use4-wheel drive.

On Saturday it worked perfectly... but then today I went to the store, and at first, everything appeared ok. But as I was turning to go down the next parking aisle, the steering seemed to jump a bit- I assumed because I had slid on the snow & ice. But then I noticed this weird rattling noise- that slowed and gradually stopped after I stopped. The noisedidn't stop 'immediately' when I stopped, it seemed to be a spinning sound that gradually wound-down and stopped after I stopped. I didn't hear it at higher speeds, but it would definitely rattle when I slowed down- and gradually spin to a stop. I put it in 2-WD, and I didn't hear the rattle sound anymore... but shifting back into 4-WD, it went into gear fine, but then the rattle would appear when I slowed again. Does anyone know what this could be?

It's just weird that it keeps spinning and gradually stops after the truck stops. But the 4-WD appears to be functioning properly when it's engaged.

Could it be something with the steering? I just can't figure out what would still be spinning- and gradually spin to a stop- after the truck has stopped.

You help is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

-Brad

Default RE: 4-WD Noise

Update:

I just took it around the block and noticed that the rattling noisedoes appear inBOTH 4WD and 2WD. It appears harsher on rough patches where the entire front suspension is jostled- but ceases when I stop. Again, it feels likea bad vibration and sounds like a spinning sound- that slowly spins to a stop- once I stop. It is not apparent ALL of the time, but appears after driving over rough patches (which tonight was ice/snow ruts).

Does anyone have an idea of what this might be and if I should be concerned about it? Or even where I can start to look for a possible problem.

Thanks for your help.

-Brad

I would check out front suspension components. Steering Stabilizer. Also using 4wd puts a little more stress on youPower steering pump. Possibly could be on it's way out. Just throwing a couple of places to start out there. Goodway to check the steering stabilizer is if it looks like its rusted and nasty and leaking then its prob time to put a new one in. 40 bucks at advanced auto for the rancho ones
