Default 42re whining noise in reverse?

Hi, the truck is a 97 1500 v6. The truck will not go into reverse untill warmed up. When it does it whines and you have to give a little gas to get it into reverse. When its going in reverse it skips and cluncks. Too much gas and it will just whine louder. With just a little though it will go. Also it just lost 3rd gear. Im under the impression that it has to do with the clutches and bands?[&:]Im in college and have no money so i was thinking of doing a rebuild myself sence all the shops in Rhode Island want 1200 or more just to rebuild. If i had the money i would just put a new one in! lol Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Default RE: 42re whining noise in reverse?

My 46Re in my 96 dodge did that for about 3 months and then it died, all the clutch packs were cooked and the clutch pack hub was destroyed no splines left on the outside. i would say rebuild it now before itreally screws up like mine. I had mine rebuilt for 600 bucks but i pulled it out and put it back in
