Check fluid level first. Also check to see if fluid has a burnt smell. If all is well with the fluid your transmission might be ready for repair or rebuild. I had the same problem with my 94 Ram 1500 .It made the same noise you described and then shortly thereafter it died. I had it rebuilt the first time it happened and threw it away the second time . I switched to a 5 speed. Theres my thoughts on the matter. Others on the forum might be able to give you more help.

I have the same problem. It whinned on the first tranny and it still did it after the rebuild. Only does it when it gets cold though.

mine was whining sometimes in reverse. Turned out my transmission was 2 quarts low. Glad I checked that when I did.

there is a TSB on an aluminum part in the 46 series automatic trans
that causes a noise

I also heard that the cold fluid ossilating in the valve body can cause it. Mine makes noise in reverse, but only when it is cold (i.e. not at operating temp).
