Truck hard to turn over
Guys, could use some help analyzing a problem. Have a ’96 Ram, 318. Sometimes it won’t start. Just clicks when I turn the ignition key. Then after a few tries it’ll finally turns over. Has done this for a few weeks now and is getting worse. I guess I can’t decide between defective: starter, solenoid, ignition switch or transmission neutral safety switch. I don’t think it’s the battery as it seems to have plenty of power once it cranks over. Any suggestions?
I'd start with the easiest thing, the battery. How many CCA does it have? and more importantly how old is it? Places like Sears or even your mechanic will test the battery for free.
Before anything, go get a battery post cleaner and clean your connections. People don't seem to realize this but just because it is connected and tight that doesn't mean crap. Terminals have to be very clean and tight to get a good connection. If the problem still persists, I would say a bad bushing in the starter causing it to seize up. Turning the key a few times might knock it lose.
Thanks. I ended up having the charging system tested at the local part store. It all checked out good but the guy testing indicated worries regarding the starter. I took the starter out and had it benchtested. It was so bad it didn't even turn on the test stand. Got a new starter and whooopeee-is all good now.....
