Default Gear Swap Question

I posted this as a reply to someone else's thread, hoping for an answer without cluttering up the forum but I didn't get on and it's now on page 3. So here it goes...

I want to put 4.10 gears in my ram, as it has 3.55. I do plan on eventually getting aprox 3" lift with 33" tires, but not yet. I want to lift it, but not to an extreme.

Would 4.10 gears be good to do now? Gas mileage isn't all that important. I didn't get a 360 V8 for gas mileage.
How hard is it to put in new gears? Is there a how to some where on this site?
And finally, where do I find these gears? Should I get a locking diff while I'm at it?

On an off-topic note... Is there a thread with a list of recalls and descriptions anywhere?

4.10s will be fine for now. They were a stock option on some Rams.

As for the installation it's suppose to be pretty involved. I'm not sure if there's any write-ups on here or not. I've heard Yukon makes good gears, but I'm sure someone else will chime in with some good places to get them.

4:10 are a good match for 33"
You don't say what your current tire size is but 3:92 were an option with stock tires. 4:10 might cause higher than ideal rpm on the highway but won't be terrible.
There are plenty on online sources for gears. Summit. 4-wheel wholesale, local parts store can order too. eBay?

Popular brands are Richmond, pro-gear, Yukon.
I've personally used Richmond and pro-gear.

I have no idea your skill level but a gear swap is a very ambitious task for a novice DIY'er.

There is more to it than just getting all the parts in the housing. If everything isn't set up right. The gears will be noisy and chew themselves up.
I know and have seen experienced professional techs spend all day getting a gear set correctly.

My current tire size is 265/75/16's. I have 3.55's now.

As for my knowledge, I'm getting there. I'm in school right now, taking the general Automotive Technology program at Hudson Valley community College. And I'll be honest, until someone shows me exactly how to do something, I won't do it. If I feel uncomfortable doing something, or feel like If I screw something up, I won't know what to do, I won't even attempt doing it.

I'll take a look at those web-sites. I'm looking on summit right now, and I haven't found them yet. But I'll keep looking...

Randy's Ring and Pinion, 4wheelparts, Performance off road center, Drive train direct, to name a few.
