Default Smelling Coolant

Well like it says past two times I've run the truck there has been a noticable scent of coolant outside the truck. Can't smell anything in the cab. Any common issue with these trucks as far as the cooling system? Appears there no loss of coolant and no noticable leaks.

Hi Kurrz, check upper rad hose where it connects to the thremostat housing (top of motor). Somethimes coolant will pool on top of the intake manifold after the engine is off and pressure builds up. Once the engine cools down and pressure drops a bit it will stop leaking. I had it happen on my ram a few years back, its worth a look.

Hope this helps

What!?!? You cooling system shouldn't be leaking at all. Check your hoses for leaks. Can you tell if the smell is coming from under the hood or out the exhaust?

Smells as if it's from under the hood. Thanks for the replies I'll check the top of the manifold tommorow. I looked over all the hoses already but, I'll check again maybe I missedthe obvious.

I'M with KAYAKMAN, I kept smelling coolant coming from the engine bay with it running but could'nt ever find any leaks. I finally checked around the thermostat housing. Needless to say that was it and the coolant was evaporating off before it could run down. I could really smell it with the motor running getting in and out of the driver side. The air flow from the fan seemed to push the smell right past the door.

Ya, same here. Look for a green powdery trail down the passengers side of the front of your motor.

If the pressure is getting so high that the coolant is leaking past the hose clamps then your radiator cap isn't working right. That or you need to tighten or replace the hose clamp it's leaking past.

I was smelling coolant but never saw any. Last night my water pump spewed steam and coolant all over the road while I coaxed my truck home. Are you hearing any strange noises when you are not idling?

No but I talked to my mechanic and he said the water pump was a weakness on these trucks.
