Default Should be easy. ENGINE ID

Heres the deal, i bought a used 2000 ram 1500 quad cab. The vin # says its a 318, but when you pop the hood, right in front of the radiator says its the 5.9 360. where else on the engine can i find the id. Block, heads etc. ? ant help would be great thx.

The engine serial number is stamped into a
machined pad located on the left, front corner of the
cylinder block. The 3rd, 4th, and 5th digits (from left to right) are the engine displacement. That's if it's 5.2. The 5.9 should read 5.9

What in the VIN made you think it was a 318..."Y" ? 5.9-360 are usually "Z" models. The engine number is usually the8th digit to the right.
X=3.9 EFI
Y=5.2 EFI
Z=5.9 EFI
5=5.9 HDC
8=5.9 Turbo Diesel

yes the vin reads "y". its always bad news when these things dont match up. thx for the help.

A 5.9 is externally balanced while the 5.2 is internally balanced. So look to see if your engine has a visible vibration/harmonic balancer on the front of the engine off the crankshaft pulley.
