Default P1740 Timing Issue Maybe?

I didn’t start getting the P1740 code until after I advanced the timing on the timing chain and installed the Hypertech. It doesn’t seem like there is anything wrong with the tranny at least that I can feel. IS there a chance that the computer is getting messed up because I’ve advanced the cam timing and the ignition timing?

p1740 usually means a bad torque converter or lock up solenoid.you need to get the torque converter stall tested.

I know what the code is I'm just grasping for straws. I have to drive across country in 2 weeks and I can't risk tearing into the truck right now. I'm leaning towards a clogged up watcha mcall it. the thing thatlockes the tc in.

Way to go, Noobie!

BTW - My machinist recommended a great rebuild shop in OKC for transmissions. Ball Park figure is $1,400 and they use all Raybestos parts. Hopfully, I'm getting her in the shop mid to late-February.

What does the code say exactly. When I installed the chain I had to retard the distributor untill It was happy. I wound up getting a code too, I dont remember the number but it could have been that.

It says P1740. Wich is tcc or o/d solenoid problem found. I guess that the pcm does see the amount of engine speed drop that it is looking for when it tells the TC to lock. Sometimes a misfire can set this code off. I don't have a misfire. I just figured that if a misfire can set it off maybe something i did is setting it off. How did you adjust the distributor without a DRB?

The distributors in these trucks is a PITA to deal with. If you search out my engine threads, I believe it was Thread #3 (The Final Chapter) where I talked about having to line up the rotor with the #1 slot on the cam sensor using a mirror and a screwdriver acting like a plumb bob. The distributor body can be turned to affect timing on these trucks without a DRB, you're just going to have to endure a lot of trial and error.

I've read your engine rebuild threads a couple of times. I'll reread #3 and find the part about the distributor. I'll you guys know if it helps anything but I really doubt it will.
