Default Overdrive Off light is ON

Driving on the highway, no load, not speeding, on a cold winter night. the O/D Off light came on, I of course hit the button a couple of times and nothing changed. i stopped, turn the truck off, waited about 1 min, the started it, and it was off at this point, the I drove about 5miles (highway) and the light came back on. I searched the forum and only found one other person with this issue.
Does this indicate an over heated tranny?
Any ideas???

Next stop is putting a for sale sign on it.

I googled it and i found a couple people stating that its the transmission exceeding 270*. Yikes, wtf... i was just driving normally. maybe low fluid? I will check in the morning. To check it, put it in nuetral right, with it running? or is that diff for this truck/tranny?

It is probably the torque converter. The same thing happened to me, costs 450 dollars. Get the torque converter replaced ASAP if you still want your tranny. Probably a solenoid needs replacing as well.

I am looking up the part price and a standard TC is about $180-360.
Anyone have any suggestions on brand?
I am calling the local shop to see what theysuggest and how much. ugh, my wife hates my truck, but not nearly as much as i hate it. LOL

Bear with your truck. I lost faith in my truck, but have been getting it back as I take care of her properly.

Thanks for the info. No, think the next truck is going to be a manual tranny, more than likely not a dodge.

I just got this pig, and hate it. big motor, little *****, big gas guzzling...and bigrepair bills. When i test drive it, it seemd rock solid, guess that was done with smoke and morrors. I give up...

its honestly breaking the bank, I got a baby due first week of july. I am going to be flat out tight with money.

I don't mind crawling under the truck, but this stuff is beyond me. once again, the local shop gets my $$.
I am going to call around on this one... I have no idea what to expect.

thanks once again, this damn truck has me down again.

From the Chrysler service manual:

If fluid temperature exceeds 260 F, the PCM causes a 4-3 downshift and engages the converter clutch. It will also illuminate the overdrive Off light and prevent shift back into fourth (overdrive) until temps get below 260 F.
