Default Problem Getting My 1996 Ram Started.

First off awesome site! I have learned quite a bit just reading through threads.

My truck is a 1996 Ram 2500 with the 5.9L engine.

Now on to my problem. Last Saturday the temperature was in the lower 20’s. I ran down to the gas station that is about ¼ mile away, when I got there something told me not to shut off the truck but I did anyway out of habit. After I got done getting what I needed I got back in the truck and it would not start. After letting it sit for a few hours I went back up there to try to start it up since it warmed up outside a bit. I still couldn’t get it to start. It would crank over so I know the battery was good. After messing around for a few minutes I remembered my Nissan did the same thing once and it was the spark plugs. Went and got plugs, changed them out and tried to start it up.

The next day my Father In-law came over to help me tow it home. We go up to the gas station and I try to start it. It fired up after cranking for a while. I let it run to let it warm up, after about 5 minutes (since the temperature was in the low 20’s again) it started to sound like it was bogging down and then it finally died. When it was bogging and trying to stay running we could hear a pretty loud sucking noise. I have always noticed that noise when I hit the gas since I got the truck and always thought it was just the air going through the intake but this time it just sounded louder.

One thing I noticed is that since last Sunday if I open up the butterflies on the throttle body and blow in there I get a real heavy smell of gas that comes out.

Today it was in the 60’s so I figured it was a good day to go out there and mess around with it. The first thing I did was open up the butterflies and take a sniff. I could still smell gas coming out of there and it was still pretty strong. The last time I tried to start it was Wednesday. I then tried to start it anyway and it would just crank but no go. I took out all of the spark plugs and they were all pretty wet with gas. I left the butterflies open and left the plugs out for a few hours to let it all air out. Put it all back together and it still wouldn’t go. I took the plugs out again to check them and they seemed to smell like gas but they were dry this time. I looked into the bottom of the throttle body with a flashlight and the whole bottom of that looks wet.

I need some help on what the problem could be. I checked to make sure I had spark and I do, just stumped right now.

Thanks,
David
