OK figured it out. It is engine too cold too long. Anyone know of a place to get engine bras so I don't have to swap out the 180 stat in the winter?

Cut a pizza box and put part of the cardboard in front of the radiator. I suggest the cooler return side. You can buy fancy ones if you want, try LMC or Geno's garage.

my engine was recently taking longer and longer to warm up and giving me less and less heat. it finally threw a 1281 and took 10 miles to put out any heat at all, wouldn't get above the 160 range no matter what. bought new t-stat and tested the old and new in a pot of water on the stove. the old one was cracking open at about 160-170, combined with the drilled hole = not much heat.

i've rethought this drilled hole idea from a winter perspective. its a stupid idea.
