LOL I know this is a dodge forum, but it's so annoying when people are just like "OHHHH FORD IS A PIECE OF **** BLAH BLAH BLAH". Any american vehicle will treat you like you treat it. My family personally owns 3 ford trucks, two with the 5.4L and one with the 4.6L. Those trucks are the most reliable thing I've ever seen. We dont abuse our fords, but we dont baby them either. Those engines are not the torquiest trucks or the most powerful, but they NEVER give up, and will always do the job. Dodges by far have much more power. Dont expect to have the zip like a dodge, but who cares, a truck is a truck, it will never fail, it just wont do it as fast as the dodge. And, they get good mpgs too, nothing staggering, but not as bad as the 5.9L magnum. I actually really like fords though, the enignes are invincible,k the transmissions are much more reliable than dodges, and they require relatively low maintance. I love my dodge, its very powerful, very good looking, great off road, but it has a lot of faults too. When i drive my dads truck, it's just like butter. The tranny is mint even after 115,000 hard miles, and not one tranny flush. IT just never gives us a problem. You will not be dissapointed with a ford, they are great running trucks, especially those tritons, they arent the most powerful, but they just always keep chugging. I love the tritons, they are a very compact and well designed engine. Goodluck on getting your new whip. Dodges are sweet, but I agree, they are much more prone to having certain things break, even if you take care of it. But either way, dodge, chevy, or ford, they all are nice. just depends on how u treat them for the most part. Goodluck!
Well written...
its true, anything can break, and all things need to be taken care of. my truck was never taken care of by its previous owners, but its following the trend of all RAMs, bad tranny, bearings, and rotting apart. so far no plenum, and the cat is rattling. this is all the same issues EVERYONE here (okay, not all) is having.
I like ford and have had great luck with them in the past. I do like the 5.4L, but also like the dakota 4.7's mpg.

I need to drive some and see.

thanks, for the level headed and realistic comment.

If you are looking for something in the mid-size, I would highly recommend the '05+ Nissan Frontier. I know it's a 4.0L V6, but it also has around 260HP...and a good name behind it. The interior space is decent for a mid-size, too. On a different note, my friend has a 2005 Chevy 1500 with a performance tuned PCM, which I drove the other day...I have to say, it made my Ram feel like it has a V6 in it.[:@] (In my defense...I do have the death flash) I think everyone has their opinions on what vehicles are crap, but logically speaking, the number of vehicles from one maker that any one person in this forum has had any contact with represents a very small percentage of the entire span of that vehicle. That's like meeting a few dumb people from one state and saying everyone in that state is stupid...it's merely a generalization basedsolely onopinion and personal preference. You will find problems with every make and model, as I am sure you know. Any vehicle you purchase is a leap of faith. You just have to trust your gut. I drive a Dodge, and I love Dodges, but anyone who would sit and say they're the toughest and most dependable trucks around is full of something...

Yes, I looked at a frontier, just a tad out of the price range, and the ones I can afford have high miles, but not many out there.

the dakota has 31K and the remainder of the 7/70,000 powertrain warranty. I drive less than 10K a year, so I could still have the warranty after my last payment. Even if i don't i will have a warranty that covers the real working parts.

I had toyotas, acruas, hondas, jeep, and fords... those were great cars/trucks (exept that damn blasted tempo). I have had two dodges, and I am willing to give it another chance. why? price and warranty. the dakota was what I wanted first, but could not afford it. after dumping money in to an antique, i realize I shouldget something newer and not dump anything in to it (aside from normal maint).
I am not really in to putting mods in to it or jacking it up. I just like dependable truck with some *****... and 4drs.

No lie. No transmission issues. I think there is a guy on this forum that has 225k on his original tranny. My wife is from CO with family inNM and TXand we have taken that truck several times on a 3000 mile plus trips. You have a 4wd and I have a 2wd. That may be the problem.

I agree $150 a month isn't going to buy you something super nice.

really?
a 2004 Dakota 4.7L, power windows, power locks, 4 door, 4x4, 4spd auto with 31,000 miles and the remainder of a 7/70,000 powertrain warranty, alloy rims, and the normal stuff like AC and a CD player...etc.
Thats not nice?

I drive less than 10k a year, so that warranty will expire by years not miles. So, in 3yrs it will expire. I can do a 48 month loan with 1000 down, and my trade. it works out to be about $167. I get a warranty, and better mileage. I already did the math and gas would save me at least $20 a week. thats $80 a month. so technically that truck would cost me $87 a month more. Thats like another $20 a week. So I could cut my bud light habit in half. LOL, kidding. that would mean I make my lunches rather than get them delivered at work. I would have the peice of mind for the next 3yrs of a warranty. its a no brainer.

I have almost considered getting an Expedition fully loaded with the 5.4... tempting, but i know the minute I did thatI would need a truck. I am going to get one from a $tealer$**** because I will see about getting a warranty. I got royally screwed buying privately. NEVER AGAIN.

if I am lucky I can get that. hope they don't notice the tranny is about to take a dump. but I think a dealership would just take the truck to auction, so they won't really care.
Okay Dealerships always have more mark-up and you shouldn't expect a warranty when the trucks model year starts with a 19. All vehicles have problems, the upkeep on the vehicles matters alomost as much as who builds it and in some cases more. Rant away, but you say you got screwed buying your truck. Did you have a mechanic look at it first? I assure you a dealership will before the trade-in.

I would much rather buy privately or from an auction than a dealership. Exp with a used car. Maybe better research next time. Have someone independent look at it. Just seems strange that you say you got screwed buying your truck then want to pass it off. In effect passing on the screw.

Three chicks I know got 04-05 F150s, and two of them lost trans. cases in less than 30K. I dunno. My buddies got a '05 Chevy ex. cab 2wd and he didn't change the oil in it for like, 15K, and it runs fine. He doesn't maintain it, and he beats the hell out of it. IDK, with everything I've personally seen, I'd probably rather go with a Chevy over a Ford. For a truck. I have just seen way too many new Fords just have all kinds of problems. The excavating company I was working for, the owner drives a Duramax, and it runs like a champ, and they have 5 F350 and F450 Powerjokes, and all 5 Fords have had injectors go, or trannies fail, one had to get a new computer, on and on. If it was me, and I was definately gonna get a new truck, and leave the Dodge family, I'd get a Chev. Just my .02
