Default Help ! I can't get to the top bolt of the starter.

Is there an easy way to remove the starter? I removed the lower nut but I cant get to the top bolt. How do you remove it?

Thanks,

Doc

I used a 1/2 in drive extension plus a mini extension to get out far enough. Used my wratchet and got mine off. If ya have to, throw a breaker bar on there. Mine were tight initially, but after you break it loose just throw the wratchet on there. idk what year truck u have, but me and my bud busted that one wire clip off of there. right now mine is silicon'd and zip tied like 9 times to hold it on. works so far.

yeah i had to put 2 extensions on mine to get it. and i could only rotate the ratchet a little at a time. its tiresome and aggrevating but thats how u have to do it.

+1 its 2 3" extensions stacked ontop of a regular sized socket. Even with them you have to pull some contortionist $hit to get in there. Youll have to get your arm up over the trans lines and then back over top of the starter and onto the bolt.

+1 on the above. i used 1/2 drive stuff (for less flex) and every 1/2" drive entension that i had to get the distance out there where i could turn the ratchet. it was torqued up tight too !

haha, well it was a catch 22 in my situation. I'm skinny so I can fit in those tight spots, and move my arm's in those wierd angles n stuff. On the other hand.. I myself couldn't break that top bolt lose by myself partially because of my build. I had my bud crawl under, and break it lose. Having 2 people definately helps a long way.

--- Edit

Oh yea, and trying to get enough swing to use my torque wrench was a PITA!

gotta practice with that torque wrench so that in tough spots you can estimate your torque without the wrench. I rarely use a torque wrench anymore. Usuially within 2-3 lbs.

The skinny thing would be fun, but if I get into a jam where my arms get stuck I just go get some paper towels and ductape and make some armor for myself and shove my arms in and get hog wild!

Just make sure you dont break it off, then you have a some serious problems. I would soak the it with some PB blaster for awhile and will help with breaking the bolt loose. Its a PITA you have to find the right combination of extensions to break the bastard loose.

To put it on I had to eyeball it through the frame and hold a crunch to get it on.
