Don't quote me, but i believe that is the rear main seal that is leaking. I have the same leak, and I'll need to do a little more research myself, but I believe you can pull the oil pan and replace it without pulling the tranny. This is going to be my summer project along with the timing chain and water pump.

I would say rear main or a tranny leak, both are possible. My tranny leak came from there.

The rear main seal leaks motor oil on my318, I dont pay no mind to it. If i kept track it would probably be around 1qt every 6000 miles.

But if the trann is leaking there, that is not a good sign, the TQ seal is leaking, and that could make the TQ slip

Place a clean rag on the ground under the leak to see wht color the oil is if its black its motor oil if its red then its the tranny.

yeahi know its motor oil for sure. i might try this oil addative thats supposed to fix up seals and stop leaks and see what she does then...hopefully i'll get it stopped though and not have to monkey around with a rear seal, that sounds like a load of fun..., thanks guys for all the input though, just making sure if i didnt fix it my motor'd blow up or something like that. thats how my luck is with the damn thing!

also, anyone replace a steering pump before? i think mines gunna take a dump soon. i can get a reman for $80 but i don't know how much of a PITA it is to do...

rear main can be replaced by dropping oil pan, oil pump, loosening the main bearing caps. the seal is a 2 piece unit. one half wraps around the upper side of the crank, and one half around the low. i replaced mine at 130k and it stopped that leak in the rear. there is a similar front main seal, but its one piece and you'll need to remove the timing cover.

i was nervous about disturbing the main bearings, but it didn't hurt anything.

Steering pumps can be a PITA, especially trying to get the pulley off the old one

i replaced one on my old chevy once. you'll need to rent/borrow the pulley puller from advance or autozone. with the puller tool it comes off easy, especially with assistance from impact wrench. it wasn't too hard. tip- take it to the car wash and blast off any grease and mud before.
