Default US DOT 10,000 Pound Vehicle Registration

I just talked with a buddy and he just told me that US DOT is requiring that all vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) OR gross combined weight rating (GCWR) over 10,000 pounds needs to register with the DOT. This includes posting DOT numbers on both sides of the trucks, maintaining a log book, and also stopping on weigh stations on the highway. I've read from truckers saying that if a log is kept, mileage reports and fuel receipts need to be submitted in a quarterly report.

I didn't buy it at first, but I've been checking other forums and rumors seem to be circulating. My truck is 6,400 pounds GVWR, and I'm a little nervous to trudge out through the snow and see what my trailer rating is.

Has anyone else heard, read, or know about such new laws? DOT isn't opened until Monday, so I'll call then. It sounds like there might be exceptions for recreation which constitutes occasional towing for non-monetary gains. The thing that gets me is even if that's true, the GCWR is still in excess.

I don't really know. I don't mean to scare anyone (except maybe you dually owners), but I'm just trying to find out if anyone else knows what is going on. People are wondering about RV's and other vehicle exceptions. I just typed in 'US DOT 10000 Pounds' in Google and started reading what I could find. I plan on calling the DOT on Monday myself, just to be on the safe side.

I really thought that was only for comercial vehicles. So if you hot-shot or tow a work trailer, yes. But for the regular guy, no.

In Louisiana you need a special licencse (class E)to drive anythingover 10,000 pds gvw. I had to get a class E to drive an RV. But I didn't have to DOT register it.

I had a friend that used to hot shot and decided one day that it would be a good idea to stop at a Mississippi weigh station. He then got a $2,000 fine for overloaded vehicle and not having a CDL (commercial drivers license).

I am pretty sure what you are talking about is for commercial vehicles.

If U register a commercial vehicle over 10,000 lbs but use it for non-commercial uses U need to have a DOT number (if traveling out of state), put not for hire on it, have a validDOT medical card.U also do not need to stop at weigh stations. I drive a 2001 F-550 with a 44 ft car trailer from Mass to Fl and have never had a problem. (knock on wood)
